E' sicuramente la specie con l'areale piu' vasto e la variabilita' dei soggetti in assoluto del genere.

Vive tra Huasco, Coquimbo e Vallenar ed in passato e' sempre stata distribuita con le varie sottospecie e nomi.Uno studio approfondito permetterebbe di capire se si tratta di effettive sottospecie o se siano soltanto forme diverse a seconda dell'areale in cui vivono.Non sviluppa cera come le altre copiapoa.

Per comodita' e ragioni di spazio raggruppero' anche le psudocoquimbane sotto il gruppo delle coquimbane.

In passato venivano distinte per la presenza della spina centrale nelle prime e l'areale di distribuzione.La pseudo cresce sulla costa mentre la coquimbana si trova anche molti km all'interno, come nella recente scoperta della ssp. andina

It is certainly the species with the most extensive range and the variability of the absolute subjects of the genus.
