L'areale di questa pianta si estende da Cifuncho fino a nord di Chanaral.E'considerata sottospecie di  copiapoa cinerea,con la quale  presenta molte somiglianze.Ha un numero di coste maggiori e generalmente presenta la lanuggine apicale di color arancio,anche se vi sono diverse popolazioni che la presentano bianca. E' ricoperta anch'essa di densa pruina.

The area of this plant extends from Cifuncho to the north of Chanaral. It is considered a subspecies of copiapoa cinerea, with which it has many similarities.
