L'areale di questa pianta si estende da nord di Taltal fino a nord di Paposo. Generalmente accestente, si distingue da cinerea per il colore della lanuggione apicale giallo-arancio e dal colore delle spine,generalmente ambrate, anche se esistono popolazioni con spine bianche ed altre a spina nera.Una forma montana di haseltoniana, ad est di Paposo, ad altitudini di 700/900 mt, viene chiamata eremophila. Pianta di non difficile coltivazione, negli ultimi anni e' divenuta tra le piu' diffuse in commercio.
